Protecting Marine Biodiversity and Coastal Communities in the Philippines
In the Philippines, France Volontaires is fostering several meaningful partnerships to further progress towards SDG 14. Through the cooperation with local and international organizations, both International Solidarity Volunteers and French Civic Service volunteers are mobilized to support local efforts. Volunteers with French NGO Better with Water (Eau et Vie) focus on improving water access and reducing waste to combat pollution that directly impacts coastal and marine ecosystems.
At People and the Sea, volunteers actively participate in community-driven marine conservation efforts. These include promoting sustainable fishing practices, conducting marine research, educating local youth, and enhancing resilience in coastal livelihoods. The initiatives empower communities to sustainably manage and benefit from their marine resources.
Blue Alliance operates across multiple Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Philippines. Volunteers play a crucial role in coral reef regeneration, mangrove reforestation, reducing bycatch of threatened species, and addressing illegal fishing practices. The organization also fosters “reef-positive” businesses and eco-tourism, creating employment opportunities while safeguarding marine ecosystems.
